On Friday, January 13th, Eduardo Fernandez Uriarte, father of six (Eddie, Jorge, Lillian, Robert, Frank, and Elizabeth) and husband to Gladys for 54 years, rejoined his second son, Jorge, in heaven at age eighty-seven. A Cuban exile who fled the island in 1960, Eduardo was a man who fought for what he believed in. First, he fought with Castro to oust the corrupt dictator Bautista; and then against Castro in the Bay of Pigs invasion when he betrayed the ideals of the Cuban revolution. Ultimately, he ended up serving his new country, the United States, for ten years in the Army, where he served two years in Vietnam. He earned many military citations for valor in combat, including three bronze stars.
Eduardo lived his life to the fullest and on his own terms. In addition to his children, he had fifteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He loved to spend time with them, and whenever possible, make them his famous arroz con pollo. Later in life, he enjoyed playing dominos with friends and also developed a love of cats, especially his incomparable Meow Meow, a 30 lb ball of love and affection. Eduardo will be missed by all who knew him. A man who, once you met him, you didn’t forget him.
