Obituary for Mrs. Maria Luisa Figueras

Maria Luisa (“Wichy”) Figueras (nee Vergez), 78, passed away in Miami, Florida December 29, 2020 peacefully with her devoted husband Dr. I. Jaime Figueras by her side. Loving daughter of the late Jose Luis and Oneida Vergez. Devoted mother of Alex (late Annette) Figueras and Anna (Caith) Kushner and step mother of Alicia (Evaristo Garcia) Figueras and Jaime (Angela) Figueras. Loving grandmother of Evan, Brendon, Damien, Amalia, and Santiago. Step-grandmother of Maria Karla, and Larisa and step great-grandmother of Benjamin. Sister of Oneida (Ramiro) Pidal and Juan Luis (Silvia) Vergez. Cousin and Aunt to many relatives.
Wichy was born in Cuba and emigrated with her family to the United States at 23 seeking freedom and a better life. While raising her children, she completed her bachelor’s degree and worked her way up from an entry level position at the IRS to retiring as an honored government employee. She was a devout Catholic, an avid reader and world traveler. She enjoyed walking the steps of Jesus in the Holy Land, riding an elephant in Thailand, kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland and experiencing the world everywhere else she went with the love of her life beside her. She was very socially active in the Cuban community of Philadelphia and made numerous life long friends everywhere she lived. Wichy will be missed by many.
